Church School Primer

"Go into all the world and proclaim
the good news to the whole creation"
Mark 16:15

Welcome To Church School!

We hope you and your child feel comfortable here. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. We want to help.

Teaching Staff: Our teachers are our greatest asset. Their commitment of time, talent, and love enables this congregation to fulfill a very important promise:  to tell our children the good news of the gospel and to help them know all that Christ commands. We are blessed to have such a fine teaching staff at Trinity.

Arrival:  Please try to arrive on time!  The first Church School Hour begins at 9:30 am. The second meets at 11:00 am. Our teachers plan carefully for the full hour, so encourage your child to be prompt.

Opening Worship:  At 9:30 am, children in first through sixth grades meet their teachers in the center space of Witherspoon for opening worship.  This brief service includes prayers, songs, offering, and a Scripture reading.  Our 11:00 am program incorporates worship elements directly into the lesson.  Children celebrating their birthdays during the coming week will receive a birthday treat (don't worry - we won't overlook our summer children!).

Closing Worship:  Children in our 9:30 am Preschool and Kindergarten classes go directly to their rooms.  Their morning ends with a special gathering time in one of the Nursery School rooms.  We will sing songs, learn Bible verses, recite short, simple prayers, and celebrate birthdays with a visit to the Birthday Basket.  Children will return to their classrooms at 10:30 am for dismissal.

Dismissal:  Dismissal is 10:30 am for the first session and noon for the second.  For safety reasons, we require that an adult pick up children from preschool through second grade.  If you must retrieve your child early, please wait at the door for the teacher.

Parent Helpers:  Parents are asked to volunteer as helpers in their children's classes on a rotating basis.  No lesson preparation is required.  We're just asking for an extra pair of hands each week. Please check the sign-up sheet outside your child's classroom to volunteer for your Sunday.

Attendance:  We strongly encourage regular Church School attendance.  Each session in our curriculum builds on the work of the previous lesson.  Children who attend class only occasionally may feel left out or lost. Continuity is important, socially as well as academically.

Absences:  We are a family at Trinity Presbyterian.  We miss you when you're not here!  Call or drop your child's teacher a note if there is a problem and don't be surprised if you get a postcard from us if we don't see you for a few weeks.

Offering:  Traditionally, an offering is accepted during the Church School Hour.  If children do not have money of their own from allowances, chores, etc., rather than give them the money each Sunday, perhaps we can ask them to complete some small task at home to earn it.  If the money they give is their own, the gesture will have more meaning.

Mission Projects:  Our Church School students will be invited to participate in several mission projects this year.  You'll hear more about these worthwhile experiences over the coming months.

Class Materials:  We provide the materials needed for class.  If your child requires something special for a particular lesson (coffee can, cardboard box, etc.), your child's teacher will send a note home to you.

Class Work:  Encourage your child to bring home his/her Church School materials.  Read them over with your child to reinforce the lesson.  Children frequently have questions about their work and need your feedback.

Bibles:  Each October, Trinity presents NRSV Bibles to our Third Grade students.  Students who enroll in Church School after Third Grade will also receive Bibles.

Prevention is the best medicine!  If there's something in particular that we should know about your child--a physical or emotional challenge, an allergy or asthma, a stressful situation at home, or even just a grumpy mood, anything that might impact on your child's behavior--please talk to your child's teacher.  The best way to avoid a difficult situation in the classroom is to be prepared.

Just in case: We pledge to treat your child with respect and to recognize his or her own unique gifts and needs.  But in the rare instance that a child's behavior interferes with the leaning of others, we may ask for parental help.

Class Visitation:  Feel free to visit your child's class and please speak with the teacher if you have a concern, a question, or a suggestion. You can also call the Director of Christian Education at the church. Let's work together to make 2000-2001 a happy, meaningful year in your child's spiritual journey.
